DOCUMENTARY FILM-MAKING

 

 

 

 

Hoa-Lan Tran is currently editing two documentary films she has recorded on ÒThe Art of Vietnamese Hand-Made Paper-Making and ÒThe Art of Traditional Wood-Block/Vietnamese PrintmakingÓ.  Traditional Vietnamese arts and crafts are currently being threatened by the efficiencies of modern commercial technology.

 

We visited a remote village in northern Vietnam  and learned about Vietnamese traditional paper-making from one of the three families still practicing this ancient craft in the country.  There is not much demand for this type of paper-making now – which craft once served the emperor of Vietnam for all legal and ceremonial historical administration.  Many families engaged in once engaged in traditional paper-making now make commercial cardboard and have abandoned the traditional arts.
